KYC is the one-time identity check you must complete before your first mutual fund investment. Done right, you never think about it again. Done wrong, it shows up years later as "KYC On Hold" right when you want to redeem.

What you need

  • PAN card. Mandatory for every investor.
  • Aadhaar. Used as proof of identity and address. It must be linked to your PAN; an unlinked PAN becomes inoperative and will block your KYC.
  • A photo or live selfie, taken during the online process.
  • Your own mobile number and email, which will be verified with an OTP.
  • Bank account details (a cancelled cheque or statement). This is for your folio, so redemptions land in your account.

For a minor, the child's details plus the parent or guardian's KYC are needed. Old-style proofs like electricity bills or bank statements are no longer accepted as KYC address proof.

How to do it on your phone

  1. Start the KYC through your distributor, a fund house website, or a KRA (KYC Registration Agency).
  2. Enter your PAN and verify your mobile and email with OTPs.
  3. Fetch your Aadhaar details using Aadhaar OTP or DigiLocker.
  4. Take a live photo, and sign on screen if asked.
  5. Submit. You'll usually get a confirmation within one to three working days.

The whole thing takes about ten minutes. At Shaiv Market I do this with investors on a video call, so you don't have to work out the forms alone.

Check your KYC status

Go to the CVL KRA or CAMS KRA website, choose "KYC Inquiry", enter your PAN, and you'll see one of these:

Status What it means What you can do
Validated Your PAN and Aadhaar have been verified with the issuing authority Invest in any fund house, no need to repeat KYC
Registered Your KYC was done with documents that couldn't be verified directly Existing investments continue; new investments may need you to re-submit KYC with Aadhaar
On Hold Something didn't check out: an invalid document, unverified mobile or email, or a PAN problem Transactions are blocked until you fix it

How to fix "On Hold"

Most cases come down to one of these:

  • Mobile or email not verified. Update and verify them through the KRA or your fund house.
  • Old documents. Redo the KYC using Aadhaar, which usually moves you straight to Validated.
  • PAN-Aadhaar not linked. Link them on the income tax e-filing portal, wait for it to reflect, then update KYC.
  • Name mismatch. If the name on your folio doesn't exactly match your PAN (even a missing middle name), correct it, because PAN checks now only return a yes or no on the match.

Two habits that save trouble later

  • Add a nominee to every folio. It takes two minutes now and saves your family months of paperwork later.
  • Keep your mobile and email current. Every transaction confirmation goes there, and it's your first line of defence against fraud.

Questions people ask

What documents are required for mutual fund KYC?

PAN, Aadhaar linked to your PAN, a photo or live selfie, and a verified mobile number and email. Bank account details are also needed to open the folio.

How do I check my mutual fund KYC status?

Visit the CVL KRA or CAMS KRA website, choose KYC Inquiry, and enter your PAN. The status will show as Validated, Registered or On Hold.

Why is my mutual fund KYC on hold?

Usually because a document could not be verified, your mobile number or email is not verified, your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, or your folio name doesn't match your PAN. Re-doing KYC with Aadhaar and verifying your contact details fixes most cases.
